Jürgen Schadeberg, whose career spans more than 65 years, has been called the father of South African photography. In 1950 at age 19, Schadeberg emigrated to South Africa from Germany. He became chief photographer, picture editor and art director at Drum magazine and helped train a generation of South African photographers. In 1964 he left South Africa for London and freelanced for various publications worldwide until returning to South Africa in 1985. He and his wife Claudia, founders of The Schadeberg Movie Company, have since published over 30 books and created several films about South Africa.
