Cities Made of Water
December 7, 2017
A crowd gathers on the recently built sea wall to watch the "bangka karera," or outrigger boat race, part of the annual fiesta celebrations in San Andres, Isla Verde. Isla Verde sits in the middle of the Verde Island Passage, a narrow body of water believed to be the "center of the center of marine biodiversity in the world." The village built a sea wall after Typhoon Nina devastated many homes and fishing boats in San Andres in 2015, but many argue that sea walls are ineffective measures against climate-related disasters such as "super-typhoons" and storm surges.
